Performing Arts — Classical Dance, Music & Theatre (GS-I)

Performing arts is a static, high-yield slice of GS-I Culture. UPSC tests the eight recognised classical dances, the two systems of classical music, and major theatre/puppet traditions, usually asking you to identify features, regions and the philosophy behind a form. The content is bounded and recurs, so precise recall of markers earns easy marks.

Classical dances (Sangeet Natak Akademi recognises 8)

Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu, temple/Devadasi origin), Kathak (North, storytelling, Hindu-Muslim synthesis), Kathakali (Kerala, elaborate make-up, male, epics), Kuchipudi (Andhra), Odissi (Odisha, tribhanga posture), Mohiniyattam (Kerala, lasya/graceful), Manipuri (Manipur, Vaishnavite Ras Leela), Sattriya (Assam, Vaishnava monasteries, Sankardev).

Music & theatre

Two systems: Hindustani (North, Persian influence, gharanas) and Carnatic (South, composition-centric, the Trinity — Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri). Both rest on raga (melody) and tala (rhythm). Theatre/folk: Koodiyattam (Kerala, UNESCO), Yakshagana (Karnataka), Ramlila, Tamasha, Nautanki; puppetry (Kathputli, Tholu Bommalata).

Dance	State	Signature marker
Bharatanatyam	Tamil Nadu	Temple origin, fixed poses
Kathak	North India	Fast footwork, spins, storytelling
Sattriya	Assam	Vaishnava monastery, Sankardev
Manipuri	Manipur	Ras Leela, gentle, Vaishnavite

Exam Tricks & Tips

🎯 Memorise the dance-to-state map cold — the most direct question type is matching form to region.
🎯 Note origin/patron (temple, court, monastery) — it lets you link the form to religion and society.
🎯 Distinguish Hindustani vs Carnatic on 2-3 axes: region, improvisation vs composition, Persian influence.
🎯 Flag UNESCO Intangible Heritage items (Koodiyattam, Vedic chanting, Ramlila, Kutiyattam) as ready examples.
🎯 Remember Sattriya was recognised as classical only in 2000 — a favourite factual hook.
❌ Do not mix up Mohiniyattam (lasya/graceful) with Kathakali (tandava/vigorous) — both Kerala, opposite in mood.

Expected question pattern

Match-form-to-region prompts, "Bring out the salient features of…", or linking a dance/music tradition to the Bhakti movement or regional identity.

Quick recap

Fix the eight classical dances with their states and origins, contrast Hindustani vs Carnatic music, and keep folk-theatre and UNESCO examples ready. Always connect a form to its religious/regional roots.

Performing Arts — Classical Dance, Music & Theatre

The performing arts segment of GS-I looks intimidating because of its vocabulary, but questions are usually broad and thematic — "How do India's classical dance forms combine devotion and discipline?" A structured grasp of the eight classical dances, the two music systems, and major theatre traditions lets you answer confidently and even earn value-addition in essays and interviews.

What this topic covers and why it matters

UPSC treats performing arts as living heritage and soft power. The marks come from connecting form to region, faith and society — for instance, that dance often originated in temple ritual (devadasi tradition) and was revived by nationalists as cultural assertion.

Classical dance — the Sangeet Natak Akademi eight

All are rooted in Bharata's Natyashastra (nritta pure movement, nritya expression, natya drama) and the abhinaya (expression) tradition.

Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu) — temple origin, geometric, fire element.
Kathak (North) — the only one with strong Hindu-Muslim (Mughal court) synthesis, storytelling, footwork and spins.
Kathakali (Kerala) — elaborate make-up (vesham), male-dominated, epic drama.
Kuchipudi (Andhra) — dance-drama, once performed by Brahmin men.
Odissi (Odisha) — tribhanga posture, sculpturesque, Jagannath tradition.
Manipuri (Manipur) — devotional Ras Leela, gentle, no sharp footwork.
Mohiniyattam (Kerala) — lasya (graceful), solo female.
Sattriya (Assam) — from Sankardev's Vaishnavite monasteries (sattras).

Music — two great systems

Hindustani (North): influenced by Persian/Central Asian elements; gharana system; emphasis on improvisation; instruments — sitar, sarod, tabla. Key figures: Tansen, later Bhimsen Joshi.
Carnatic (South): more devotional and composition-bound; the Trinity — Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri; kriti form; instruments — veena, mridangam.
Both share the raga (melodic framework) and tala (rhythmic cycle) architecture but diverge in treatment.

Theatre and folk forms

Sanskrit theatre (Bhasa, Kalidasa), and the surviving Kutiyattam (Kerala, UNESCO-listed).
Folk/regional theatre: Ramlila, Jatra (Bengal), Tamasha (Maharashtra), Yakshagana (Karnataka), Bhavai (Gujarat), Nautanki (UP).
Puppetry (Kathputli, Tholu Bommalata) and street theatre (nukkad natak) as tools of social messaging.

Answer-writing application

For "Classical performing arts as vehicles of both devotion and social change":

Intro: the devadasi-temple origin and its 20th-century revival (Rukmini Devi, E. Krishna Iyer).
Body: devotional roots (bhakti, Jagannath, Vaishnavism); discipline (guru-shishya, gharana/sattra); syncretism (Kathak); modern reinvention as soft power and protest (street theatre — Safdar Hashmi).
Conclusion: performing arts as living, evolving heritage.

Linkages

Ties to Bhakti-Sufi movements (History), Society (identity, gender in the devadasi debate), soft power (GS-II, IR — ICCR, festivals abroad), and conservation (intangible heritage, UNESCO lists).

Value-addition

Note UNESCO Intangible Heritage entries (Kutiyattam, Vedic chanting, Ramlila, Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja); cite the Natyashastra as the foundational text and Sangeet Natak Akademi's classification.

❌ Common mistake

Confusing lasya (graceful, feminine) with tandava (vigorous, masculine), or mismatching a dance to its state (a frequent slip in a hurried answer). A small factual error here dents credibility — memorise the eight-form grid cold.

🔑 Key points

✓- Eight classical dances, each tied to a state and tradition; all rooted in the Natyashastra.
✓- Music: Hindustani (improvisation, gharana, Persian influence) vs Carnatic (composition, the Trinity, devotional).
✓- Theatre spans Sanskrit, folk (Jatra, Yakshagana) and modern street theatre.
✓- Devadasi origin → nationalist revival → soft power is the key analytical arc.

🔁 Recap

✓Learn the eight-dance and two-music grid cold, then rise above the list by connecting each form to region, faith and social change. That analytical layer — not the vocabulary — is what earns marks.

Performing Arts — Classical Dance, Music & Theatre — Worked Example

Worked Example

Problem/Question: "India's classical dance forms are a synthesis of the sacred, the regional and the codified." Examine with examples. (10 marks)
Solution/Model answer:
Intro: The eight classical dance forms recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi draw a common grammar from Bharata's Natyashastra yet retain vivid regional identities.
Body:

Sacred roots: Bharatanatyam evolved in Tamil temples (devadasi tradition); Odissi depicts Jagannath worship; most forms narrate mythological themes (nritta, nritya, natya).
Regional distinctiveness: Kathak (North India, Mughal courtly refinement); Kathakali and Mohiniyattam (Kerala); Kuchipudi (Andhra); Manipuri (Manipur, Vaishnavite Ras Leela); Sattriya (Assam, Vaishnava monasteries).
Codification: shared vocabulary of mudras, rasa-bhava, tala; the Natyashastra as the foundational text.
Conclusion: This blend of a pan-Indian aesthetic code with local devotional and courtly traditions makes classical dance both a unifying and a diversifying cultural force — an example of "unity in diversity".
Answer/Takeaway: Classical dance forms share a codified grammar (Natyashastra, mudras, rasa) but express distinct regional and devotional identities, exemplifying India's cultural pluralism.
